Clothing essentials for your newborn
Are you feeling overwhelmed by the process of setting up a nursery? Did you have a shopping list for your newborn? My guess is, you’re probably wondering how many baby clothes do I need? Just like me when I passed my first trimester and immediately jumped on baby websites. But hold on a second...
For many parents-to-be, it’s tough to resist adding a million baby outfits to your shopping list. On one hand, messes happen—a lot—and having clothing options for quick outfit changes can be handy. But on the other, babies grow quickly, and your little one isn’t going to stay in one size for very long.
So, what do I need for my baby's wardrobe?
You need clothes which are safe, comfortable, soft and easy to take care of.
Baby’s skin is 5 times thinner and more sensitive than ours. That’s why it is important to get the most gentle fabric to avoid any irritation. One of the most common reasons that babies cry is often about being comfort. Clothes made from natural fabric such as bamboo, natural cotton are good choices. Both of these fabrics are safe and gentle against your baby’s sensitive skin.
Keep in mind that you are going to be changing A LOT of diapers throughout the day for newborns (in average 7-9 times a day for the first weeks!!!), so you want clothing that are practical for you, not more of a struggle. Stretchy jumpsuits that fasten at the front are best, as well as tops with envelope necks, which are easier to get over your baby’s head.
Practical Newborn Clothing List
So here is the list that was recommended by my midwife, with a few adjustments based on my own experiences after my little one was born:
- 4 to 6 Bodysuits in size 56 to 62. I bought size 60 and it did the job for long.
- 2 pairs of socks, smallest size
- 2 thin hats for staying inside
- 3 Pairs of pants
- Cuddle toy - best thing ever to sleep training for me
- 4 Sleepsuits
- 3 to 4 Rompers in size 50 to 62, these go over the bodysuits and keep your baby warm inside
- 4 cardigans or pullovers in size 50 to 62
- 1 to 2 Baby Overalls for going out.
- Outdoor hat
